Bayern Munich are ready to reduce the size of their squad in the Bundesliga winter break, general manager Uli Hoeness has indicated. "The squad will certainly be smaller," Sport Bild weekly on Wednesday quoted Hoeness as saying  unsure

Hoeness said players who wanted to stay could do so, "but I assume some players will want to change."

Among candidates to leave are thought to be defenders Andreas Goerlitz, Christian Lell and Breno, and midfielders Jose Ernesto Sosa and Alexander Baumjohann.

Sport Bild speculated that Italy striker Luca Toni and Ukraine midfielder Anatoly Timoschuk, who joined in the summer, might also be keen on leaving.

Hoeness, who at the end of next month moves from the managerial post to succeed Franz Beckenbauer as president, said he had given absolutely no thought to parting with coach Louis van Gaal after an inconsistent start to the season.

"We have a very stable and self-confident coach to whom everyone has to get accustomed. This process is continuing," he said.

Quote Of The Week

"It`s a great honour for me to be voted as winner of the Ballon d`Or and to become the first Argentine in history to receive this award, I knew I was among the favourites, because Barca have had a prolific year and we won everything, but I didn`t expect to win it by such an important margin. The Ballon d`Or is something very important for me. All those who won it were great players and some great players never won it."

Did You Know

Alessandro Del Piero has captained Italy seven times (including the world cup in 2006 and Euro 2008). He also regularly wore the number 10, but later gave it to Francesco Totti and switched to the number 7, as it was the first number he wore at the start of his career. Even though the number 10 was vacated after Totti retired from the national team in July 2007, Del Piero denied any interest in taking back the number, saying he was satisfied with the number 7. On May he was recalled by popular demand to Italy`s UEFA Euro 2008 squad after nine-month absence from international duty, and thus became the second Italian player to participate in 7 major international tournaments (EURO 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008; World Cup 1998, 2002, 2006).

Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen dropped another point when they were held to a goalless draw at Hannover 96 on Saturday, but remain four points clear as Bayern Munich continued their rise up the table.

Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini defended Cristiano Ronaldo after the world`s most expensive player was sent off for picking up two yellow cards against Almeria at the Bernabeu on Saturday night.

England have never beaten a major football nation in the knockout stages of a World Cup on foreign soil.

Claudio Marchisio scored the winner as Juventus beat champions Inter Milan 2-1 in a bad-tempered clash at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday to breathe new life into the Serie A title race.
