Beckham Stays On To Boost 2018 Bid
04 Dec 2009
David Beckham has expressed his grief for his grandfather but said Joseph West, who died aged 83 this week, would have wanted him to stay in South Africa to help England's 2018 World Cup bid.
"Of course, any family thing like this is tough," he said. "My grandad had been not well for quite a few months but it's something that, when it happens, nothing can prepare you for it.
"If I had decided to go home, I know what he was like - he was an East End strong person. He would have shouted at me for leaving this because he was passionate about his country, he fought for his country and I know how proud he was of me. He would have wanted me to stay.
"It's out there now [the issue of his asthma]. Sometimes I have good days and bad days. I've never hidden it but it's something I've had for a good few years now."
It had been reported that the 34-year-old smokes cigars, but Beckham insists those rumours have been exaggerated.
More Injury Woe For United
07 Dec 2009 The double blow is part of an atrocious injury situation which leaves Sir Alex Ferguson without 12 players, including Nemanja Vidic, for Tuesday night's game against Wolfsburg. Owen Hargreaves, who is still troubled by a knee complaint which has kept him out all season, will also miss the midweek fixture. Rooney has hamstring injury while Berbatov has a knee problem, with both rated doubtful for Saturday's home game with Aston Villa. But it is in central defence where Ferguson has the biggest headache. Ferguson had hoped there would be an improvement in the situation by the weekend but while Nemanja Vidic should have recovered from flu, the outlook for Wes Brown, who limped off at Upton Park with a hamstring injury, is not as positive. ------------------------------------------------- Manchester United Must Battle AC Milan To Sign Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko
07 Dec 2009 United manager Ferguson has identified the imposing 23 year-old as a leading target for recruitment at the end of the season, but Dzeko's publicly-expressed desire to play for Milan has given the Italians a head start in the race to secure the prolific striker's signature. Redzepagic said: “The contacts with Milan and Wolfsburg go back to the summer, but there are no conditions for a transfer.” Sarajevo-born Dzeko, whose childhood in the Bosnian capital was scarred by the four-year siege of the city during the Balkan conflict, has been an unqualified success in German football since completing a 4 million euro move to Wolfsburg from Czech club Teplice in 2007.

Manchester City 2 Chelsea 1

06 Dec 2009
Shay Given was the hero as top dogs Chelsea were brought down to earth.
Mark Hughes' big-money buys, who went behind to Adebayor's own goal, added Chelsea to the Carling Cup scalp of Arsenal.
Given was happy his heroics ended a run of seven league draws and said: "It's nice to do it against Chelsea, a top team.
Hughes was full of praise for his side and said: "We were magnificent from start to finish."
City began well and Tevez nipped past John Terry but failed to find Adebayor with his cross.
Didier Drogba had Chelsea's first chance when he latched on to Deco's flicked pass but Given saved the day with a fine block.
Michael Ballack's delivery was headed across goal by Drogba to Ivanovic whose close-range shot was booted away by Given.
Micah Richards nearly pulled City level when he rose highest to meet Gareth Barry's corner but couldn't keep the ball down.
Shaun Wright-Phillips brought a save out of Cech with an angled drive then Ricardo Carvalho cleared Richards' header off the line acrobatically.
Wright-Phillips' shot skimmed off Richards and Adebayor turned the ball home at the second attempt.
Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti said: "We were unlucky because Richards handled."
After the break City attacked from the off and Wright-Phillips beat Cole before cutting the ball back for Adebayor whose shot wasn't strong enough to beat Ivanovic on the line.
The wall seemed at fault as Tevez simply stroked the ball low past Cech to send the Eastlands crowd wild with joy.
