Bayern Munich and Manchester United still aim to lure goalkeeper Manuel Neuer away from Schalke 04 despite the veto of coach and sports director Felix Magath. Britain's Daily Mail said that United manager Sir Alex Ferguson "is believed to have settled on Manuel Neuer as his prime target" to replace Edwin van der Sar next season at Old Trafford once the veteran Dutchman retires.
Munich already know about Schalke's resistance to let Neuer go as they were snubbed last summer.
Magath, however, has said on several occasions that the under-21 European champion and fan icon Neuer is the only Schalke player not for sale, despite Schalke's big financial problems.
Beckenbauer Standing By Beleaguered Van Gaal
Although Bayern have actually made an even worse start to the season under Van Gaal, Beckenbauer believes no comparison can be made between the two. "We just need to leave Van Gaal in peace and give him faith and then things will work,'' Beckenbauer said. According to Beckenbauer, the same situation with Klinsmann will not present itself again towards the end of the current season. "Van Gaal has not been able to do everything he wanted so far, but nothing is lost yet. I am convinced that when the squad is fully fit again, we will also win our games.'' he told the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper. | Jones Needs More Surgery, U.S. Hopes In Doubt Thursday, 8 October 2009
